Top 10 Vegan Cooking Hacks
Veganism is on the rise, which makes it easy to find vegan products in stores. But there may still be instances whenyou’re mid-way into cooking a dish and you realise you don’t have an ingredient that you need that’s vegan, and you have to improvise– then these tricks will come in handy.These hacks not only substitute perfectly for vegan ingredients, but are also cheap and are common kitchen staples that you can find lying around.
1. Add Vinegar or lime juice to plant milk to make vegan buttermilk.
For 1 cup plant milk, add 1 tbsp 3.lime juice or vinegar.
Stir well and let it sit for 5-10 mins to let the milk thicken.
2. Use chia seeds or flax seed meal as an egg replacement in baking.
Finely ground chia seeds or flax seeds into a meal.
For 1 tbsp grounded chia/flax meal, add 2 tbsp water.
Mix well and allow it to sit for 10 minutes until it turns into a thick gel.
3. Nut Butters like peanut, almond and cashew butter can be used to substitute eggs.
To replace 1 egg, use 3 tbsp of creamy nut butter.
4. Carbonated water works great as an egg substitute while baking breads, cakes and muffins.
1/4th cup of carbonated water can replace 1 egg.
5. Swap butter with avocado puree in baking.
Use a 1:1 substitution i.e., replace 1 cup of butter with 1 cup of mashed avocado.
6. You can also simply replace butter with coconut oil or any vegetable oil in baking.
Use 3/4th the amount of oil for the specified amount of butter. For example, substitute 1 cup of butter with 3/4th cup of oil.
7. Nutritional yeast can be substituted for parmesan cheese.
You can either cook with it or sprinkle over a dish to make it cheesier and creamier.
8. Soak cashews in hot water for a quick sour cream
Boil the nuts in hot water for 10 minutes. Drain and rinse.
Soak them again in hot water for about 30 minutes or more (The softer the cashews, the creamier the texture)
In a blender, add the cashews, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/4th tsp salt and blend until the texture is smooth and creamy.
9. Make whipped cream using coconut cream.
Refrigerate full fat coconut cream overnight.
Once it turns to a solid cream, add it to a mixing bowl and whip until it forms stiff peaks.
10. Make ice cream with frozen bananas.
Freeze few peeled bananas. Blend them while frozen. Add dark chocolate or peanut butter, or fruits for a variety of flavors.
